JCBA's Fall 2026 exhibition is a fascinating selection of pop-up books from the collection of Eric Greenberg (the Pop-Up Dude). The exhibition is a timeline, of sorts, of the history of commercial pop-up books over the course of the past one hundred years... along with a few one-of-a-kind and limited edition pop-ups from the Jaffe Collection.

The show begins in the lobby outside the Jaffe Center with books produced in the early 1930s, when Harold Lentz and Blue Ribbon Books began using the term "Pop-Up" for books like The Pop-Up Pinocchio and The Pop-Up Mother Goose, while across the Atlantic in the UK, Strand Publications produced Bookano Stories with Pictures that Spring Up in Model Form. The concept for both companies was similar: to make books that captured the awe and wonder of stories that spring to life out of the pages of books. This early period featured amazing paper mechanics in extraordinary books.

World War II brought concerns that naturally shifted attention away from pop-up books. One of the books in our exhibition, however, is an American patriotic piece from 1942 designed to drum up support for the war effort. You'll find Uncle Sam on the back cover and inside, model airplanes to build, coded messages to send, and war savings stamps to buy.

In the post-WWII era, pop-ups for a few decades took a sharp turn downward in quality, but there are some exceptions. Between 1956 and 1991, the great Czeck illustrator and paper engineer, Vojtěch Kubašta, created over 150 amazing books, and in the mid-1960s, Wally Hunt, through his company Graphics International, pioneered more interactive pop-up books. Graphic International's talented paper engineers included James Roger Diaz, Tor Kokvig, John Strejan, Ib Penick, and David Carter.

Carter, together with paper engineers like Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, pushed the pop-up book to new heights, and the works of these creators from the 1990s to the current day play a major role in our narrative about this century of pop-up books. Our show features many of the paper engineers that have been releasing work since. You'll find works here by Kees Moerbeek, Bruce Foster, Ron van der Meer, David Pelham, David Hawcock, Gerard Lo Monaco, Marion Bataille, Philip UG, Dominique Ehrhard, and Simon Arizpe.

To round things out, we've supplemented Eric Greenberg's collection with pop-up books from the Jaffe Collection, all of which are limited editions or one-of-a-kind. These artists include Susan Joy Share, Ed Hutchins, Paul Johnson, Debra Weier, Andrew Binder, and Shawn Sheehy.

The portion of the exhibition located inside the Jaffe Book Arts Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 11 AM to 4 PM, and Friday, 11 AM to 1 PM. Please note: JCBA is currently operating with only one person on staff. We recommend emailing JCBA Director John Cutrone ahead of your visit to be sure the center will be open.

Directions

The Jaffe Center for Book Arts is located on the third floor east of Florida Atlantic's Wimberly Library. From I-95 or the Florida Turnpike, exit Glades Road, east. The FAU campus is located just east of I-95. If you enter the campus at FAU's main entrance (the one furthest west on Glades Road... and the first one you get to approaching from I-95 or the turnpike), you will enter on West University Drive. Continue straight on West University Drive to the traffic light at its intersection with Volusia Street. Turn right onto Volusia Street. You will see a parking garage on Volusia Street, and the Wimberly Library is the next building east of the parking garage.

The I-95 interchange for Florida Atlantic University (Exit 48A) takes you directly from the interstate to FAU. Once you pass the traffic light at Spanish River Boulevard, you are on the FAU campus on FAU Boulevard. Continue to the traffic signal at the intersection of FAU Boulevard and University Drive (FAU Stadium will be on your right). Turn right onto University Drive. Turn left at the traffic signal at Volusia Street. You will see a parking garage on Volusia Street, and the Wimberly Library is the next building east of the parking garage.
Exhibition Hours

The portion of the exhibition that is in the Jaffe Book Arts Gallery is available for viewing during our regular hours: Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 4 PM. Visits outside these hours are possible, by appointment. To schedule an appointment, fill out the form at the bottom of this page, or email jcutrone@fau.edu. PARKING

Visitors to the FAU campus must pay at the meters or use the ParkMobile app (or visit https://parkmobile.io/) to park on campus. Both are available 24/7. There are no visitor decals or badges.

Visitors using the ParkMobile app or website may park in any of the yellow or blue lots. Blue spots are designated by normal white lines on the ground. Parking Garage 1, which is the garage adjacent to the Library, is a blue lot. The ParkMobile parking zone for the library's parking lot (Lot 19/20) is Zone 6927. The parking zone for Parking Garage 1, which is the building just west of the library, is Zone 6931.

Vehicles paying by physical meter must park in the yellow metered lot and spaces. These will have yellow lines on the ground as well as “Pay By Plate” signs in front of each. These are found in Lot 19 in front of the Library.

Parking is $2.50 per hour. There is no free parking on campus. The meters and ParkMobile accept credit cards as a payment method. There is no backing in on campus; Vehicles must be parked nose-in. Vehicles must park in designated parking spots as well. There is no parking in the grass, streets, roads, loading zones etc. allowed.

BUILDING ENTRANCE / SECURITY

Everyone entering and leaving FAU’s Wimberly Library must be swiped in and out, using their FAU Owl Card. For visitors without Owl Cards, once you’re inside the lobby of the building, let the folks at the front desk know you are here for the Jaffe Center and they will grant you access. (This may involve waving at the front desk crew to get their attention).
